Undoubtedly at a critical juncture in his reign as King of Contemporary Reggae-Dancehall music, Dexta Daps, despite the many obstacles he has endured, once again unequivocally demonstrated why he is befitting of the title he has earned.
In a previous article titled ‘Dexta Daps, The Contemporary King of Reggae-Dancehall music’ which articulated his dominance, relevance, influence, and artistry. Dexta Daps on July 31st, 2020, through his album VENT regally lay claim to the throne quashing any thoughts of insurrection.
The album which recruits King of Dancehall Beenie man, Reigning Queen of Dancehall Spice, Reggae Coroner Tarrus Riley, Rebellion Soul-stress Ikaya, Rising Dancehall General Chronic Law, HipHop Novis Friyie and others, delivers what can be described as a ‘Compilations of Psalms from a Jamaican Rude Bwoy”.
The artiste in a strategic marketing fashion, teased fans with songs and visuals from the upcoming projects weeks prior to its release to rave reviews. Sticking to his core themes of Sex, Relationship, Poverty, Upliftment, and Friendship, the artiste explores those realms through his lens addressing his own struggles as Jamaica’s modern day ‘Gurl Dem Sugar’; and another voice of the ghetto -a living lore amongst/for his peers.
Dexta Daps who skillfully and gracefully dabbles between reggae and dancehall sounds whilst fusing HipHop and RnB notes effortlessly on his album (VENT), laments about relationship drama, sexual desires, ghetto youth struggles and being portrayed by the Jamaica’s Defense Force as one of Seaview/West Kingston’s Most Wanted in 2020 which led to his arrest under very questionable motives.
With his musical maturity, understanding and appreciation for the opposite sex and their desires, he not only vocally stimulates their minds but advocates for female independence straying from the typical Jamaican culture/ideology- a feminist in his own right.
The artiste musical metaphors which is as hard as hard as Shabba Madda Pot but just as gentle as her love, takes his audience on an orchestrated musical high representing the devils taunting voice in a woman’s ear. Exploring not just the intimacy he demands and also sought by those who desire him, the artiste also simultaneously calls to arms ghetto youths as soldiers in a rise against injustice and systematic oppression.
Dexta’s blend of artistry which will withstand the test of time as demonstrated on his latest project might not land him neither a Grammy nod nor yield charting success which it deserves. However, one does hope his peers, fans and critics will speak of its importance, value, and not discredit the projects relevance today but also sit it on the shelves next to some of the industry’s greats.
