As Jamaicans, like the rest of the world, slowly learn to differentiate between the various sounds emerging from the continent of Africa, the motherland sounds’ influence and domination on charts globally speak to the rebirth of forgotten nations.

Blazing to stardom with her smash hit in 2018, Farin, recording artiste Teniola Apata, more popular as Teni, has been slowly igniting the Afro-pop genre and her continent over the past few years. The fire-brand artiste, who hasn’t been shy about addressing social and political norms, has metamorphosed. Teni continues pushing boundaries as she captures the voice of a new African populace, arguably influenced by Western culture.

In her debut album, “Wondaland, released in 2021, Teni takes her audience on a rollercoaster. The 17-track project, which featured Davido on a single titled “For You” at the time, was one of the most popular songs in the genre as Davido rose to global musical prominence. The single, which has accumulated over 14 million streams, secured top placement on the official UK Afrobeats chart, Apple Music Nigeria, Audiomac, and other platforms and charts. Other notable singles, such as Hustle, Were, 100 Meters, Moslado, XL, Black, and Toxic, demonstrated her understanding of her audience and her desire to shake up and infiltrate all aspects of the entertainment scene.

In many critics’ opinion, her single “Dads Song,” an ode to her father, laid the foundation of who she was, is, and will be as she embarks on her journey, wherever it may lead. On the single, Teni speaks to her father, Simeon Apata, a retired Nigerian army Brigadier-General, who gunmen assassinated on January 8, 1995. In several interviews, Teni describes her father as a disciplinarian and philanthropist while addressing the trauma arising from the unfortunate event.

On her sophomore album, “Tears of the Sun,” is where she grapples with her inner demons, emerging yet triumphant. With thought-provoking lyrics, standing alone, and challenging the odds, Teni stands firm like Nigerian heroine Efunroye Tinubu statute erected in the nation’s capital. While this heroine in her own right had a controversial rise, it’s her revolutionary gender-breaking vision that Teni shares as her agency dismantles, educates, and rebuilds.

Teni, an African feminist in her own right, masterfully uses her artistic agency in ‘Tears of the Sun.’  In an article published in the African Report titled ‘Nigeria’s Teni the Entertainer: Living on her own terms’ written by Eniola Akinkuotu it notes how Teni on this latest project sets the tone from the first track titled, ‘YBGFA’ (Young Black Girl from Africa) where she dismisses sanctimonious platitudes and stereotypes, questioning normative ideals on sexuality which sparks controversy among young Nigerians living in a society where unconventional sexual orientation is frowned upon and is considered criminal.”

The author further adds that “Teni’s lyrics are imbued with innuendos and double entendres, as words like rainbows, which could connote sexual diversity or hope, are used in the song, suggesting a story about her hidden truth or the struggle of a black woman who wants to break free from the chains of societal limitation,” supporting her agency and well-deserving titles.

Addressing artificial intelligence, gender, sexuality, the price of fame, and other themes that resonate with her audience, Teni in “Tears of the Sun” not only raises the bar for her peers but also elevates conversations, demolishing the status quo and giving credence to a growing, underserved populace across Africa.

A young black girl from Africa, tasting the rainbow in her single Malika, Teni, references Revelation 4:10. The scripture speaks to complete humility and submission; they throw their crowns at God’s throne. Through this act of worship, they acknowledge that only God is sovereign and deserves worship.

Malaika is TENI’s powerful tribute to God, reflecting her journey of growth and transformation since her last album. Produced by Genio, the track showcases TENI’s unwavering gratitude to God for guiding her through both pain and success.
